How To Connect Non-Threaded Galvanized Pipes?

Introduction

Non-threaded galvanized pipe is a type of galvanized pipe, which is mostly used in outdoor pipes, irrigation systems and some old residential systems. There are two types of galvanized pipes: threaded and non-threaded. Threaded pipes are mostly threaded connections, which are simple to connect. Non-threaded pipes are relatively more difficult to connect. This article will mainly introduce the uses and functions of non-threaded galvanized pipes.

The connection methods of non-threaded galvanized pipes include: ferrule fittings, repair fittings and flange welding. Each method can withstand different pressures and environments.

Non-Threaded Galvanized Pipes

Method 1: Compression Fittings (Slip Couplings)

What they are

Ferrule fittings are a type of mechanical pipe fittings, also commonly known as slip fittings or trimming fittings. They are usually connected with compression washers or rubber sleeves.

How to use them

Step 1: First cut one end of the pipe flat and remove rust or some debris.

Step 2: Insert the galvanized pipe into the fitting.

Step 3: Tighten the nut onto the steel pipe and secure it with a washer.

Step 4: Check for leaks.

Best for

Temporary use during maintenance

Connecting different materials such as copper, PVC or PEX.

Underground pipes or exposed outdoor environments.

Method 2: Flanged Connections

What they are

Flanged connection is also a type of connection. Flanges are welded on both ends and connected by bolts and nuts.

How to use them

1.First weld the flange to one end of the steel pipe.

2.Install a gasket between the two flanges.

3.Use bolts and nuts to fix the two flanges together.

Best for

Mostly used for large-diameter steel pipes

Water treatment and some industrial piping systems

Some pipes that need frequent disassembly and maintenance

Method 3: Flexible Rubber Couplings (Fernco-Type)

What they are

Rubber sleeve couplings with metal bands are flexible waterproof connectors that can be used to connect two non-threaded pipes. It is also commonly called Fernco-type couplings.

How to use them

1.Put one end of the rubber coupling into the steel pipe.

2.Align the two steel pipes.

3. Place the joint between the two steel pipes and tighten the stainless steel band with a screwdriver or wrench.

Best for

Drainage and ventilation pipe systems

Outdoor pipe systems

Some temporary or semi-permanent joints

Method 4: Welding

What it involves

Welding two galvanized pipes, usually permanently. Mostly used in industrial pipe systems.

How to use it

Bevel and clean both ends of the steel pipe.

Weld the two steel pipes using MIG or welding rods.

A pressure test is required after welding.

Best for

Permanent welding, mostly used in high-pressure systems.

Professional pipe systems

Note: Galvanized pipe welding may release some toxic fumes. Welding requires ventilation and safety equipment.

Tips for Success

First, accurately measure the size and cut.

If the installation environment is outdoors, apply a preventive agent to the ferrule joint.

When connecting galvanized pipes with pipe fittings of other materials, you need to check whether the materials are compatible.

Do not forcefully connect incompatible steel pipes, as this will reduce the sealing performance.

Summary

Non-threaded galvanized pipes can be connected well by selecting appropriate tools and accessories. Four connection methods are also introduced above, compression or sliding joints, flange joints, flexible rubber joints and welding processes. Choose different connection methods according to different uses.
