Gate Valve Components: Parts, Functions and Materials Guide

Table of content

This article mainly introduces the components, functions, and production materials of gate valves. The components include: valve body, valve cover, wedge block, valve stem, valve seat, packing, and operating parts.

In the grading of gate valves, the valve body and valve cover are mainly the outer boundaries used to contain the internal components of the gate valve. The valve stem is a linkage rod between the handwheel and the gate.

What Are the Main Components of a Gate Valve?

This article mainly introduces the classification and functions of industrial gate valve parts. They are divided into three categories: pressure-containing parts, internal trim and sealing parts, and operating parts.

The valve body and bonnet bear pipeline pressure. The gate, valve stem and seat rings control fluid flow and realize shutoff. Packing, gland, gasket and bolts stop external leakage. Handwheel, gearbox or actuator offers power to open and close the valve.

Gate Valve Component Primary Function
Body Contains pressure and connects the valve to the pipeline
Bonnet Encloses and supports the stem and internal mechanism
Gate or wedge Opens or blocks the flow passage
Stem Transfers operating force to the gate
Seat rings Form the main shutoff sealing surfaces
Packing and gland Prevent leakage around the stem
Gasket and bolting Seal and secure the body-bonnet joint
Handwheel or actuator Supplies operating torque

The structure of each component changes with valve size, pressure level, bonnet form and operation mode, while their basic functions stay the same.

What Is the Function of the Gate Valve Body?

The valve body is the main pressure-bearing part of a gate valve. It is equipped with flow channels, end connections, seat mounting positions and guiding structures for the wedge.

Industrial gate valve bodies are usually made of carbon steel or stainless steel. WCB is typical carbon steel casting material; CF8 and CF8M are widely adopted stainless steel castings.

The valve body can adopt flanged, butt-welded and other end connection forms. Its flange size and pressure-temperature parameters need to comply with relevant industry standards.

When purchasing, buyers need to pay attention to wall thickness, casting quality, flange processing precision, dimensional accuracy and material certification of the valve body.

What Does the Bonnet Do in a Gate Valve?

The bonnet seals the top of the valve body and supports the valve stem, packing assembly, yoke and operating parts.

The valve body and bonnet jointly constitute the pressure-bearing structure. Most industrial gate valves connect the bonnet to the body using bolts and nuts. A gasket is placed between the sealing surfaces to avoid leakage.

Typical bonnet types cover bolted, welded and pressure-seal structures. These different connection forms share the same core function: resisting pressure and enabling maintenance of internal components.

The joint between body and bonnet is a critical inspection position. Improper gaskets, unbalanced bolt tightening or damaged sealing surfaces will lead to external leakage.

How Does the Gate or Wedge Control Flow?

The gate, also known as the wedge, serves as the main closing part of the gate valve.

When opening, the valve stem lifts the wedge off the valve seats. At full open status, the wedge moves out of the main flow channel, enabling fluid to flow with low resistance.

When closing, the wedge descends between seat rings. Its sealing surfaces fit against the seats to cut off fluid flow in the pipeline.

Solid wedge and flexible wedge are two mainstream structures. The flexible wedge adapts to slight thermal expansion and minor assembly deviation, whereas the solid wedge features a simpler rigid structure.

The sealing effect relies on wedge shape, surface smoothness, guide gap, assembly alignment and fitting condition with seat rings. Gate valves need to work under fully open or fully closed state.

Partially open operation will cause erosion, vibration and uneven abrasion on sealing surfaces.

What Is the Role of the Gate Valve Stem?

The valve stem transmits power from handwheel, gearbox or actuator to the wedge.

The operating device turns rotary motion into linear motion. Two common types are available: the stem rises above the handwheel when opening, or keeps constant external height with internal threads driving the wedge.

The stem needs to bear operating torque, tension, compression and frequent switching.

Key manufacturing requirements are listed below:

  • Stem straightness
  • Thread precision
  • Surface smoothness
  • Connection robustness
  • Anti-corrosion and anti-wear performance

Industrial valve stems are generally made of stainless steel or alloy steel. The material grade shall match the medium, pressure, temperature, packing material and required mechanical strength.

How Do Gate Valve Seats Create a Seal?

Seat rings build fixed sealing surfaces inside the valve body. When the valve closes, the wedge presses against seat rings to realize flow shutoff.

Most industrial metal gate valves adopt metal-to-metal sealing. Seat rings can be integrated with the valve body, or mounted by threading, welding, pressing and other recognized ways.

Seat Feature Why It Matters
Material Determines corrosion, erosion, and wear resistance
Surface finish Influences shutoff tightness
Alignment Ensures even contact with the wedge
Hardfacing Improves resistance to galling and erosion
Attachment method Affects repairability and service procedures

For harsh working conditions, sealing surfaces can be overlaid with hard alloy like Stellite. It is necessary to control the hardness difference between wedge and seat surfaces to avoid surface scratching.

Seat leakage is usually caused by assembly misalignment, damaged sealing surfaces, trapped impurities, thermal deformation or improper machining tolerances.

What Are Packing, Gland, and Gland Flange Used For?

The valve stem penetrates the bonnet, which brings risk of external leakage. The packing system is used to seal this position.

Packing rings are placed in the stuffing box surrounding the stem. The gland follower compresses the packing, and gland flange together with gland bolts keep stable compression force.

Flexible graphite, PTFE and composite materials are widely used as packing. Material selection takes temperature, pressure, medium compatibility, fire protection and fugitive emission standards into consideration.

The compression degree of packing needs precise control. Insufficient compression leads to stem leakage, while over-compression increases operation torque and speeds up abrasion of stem and packing.

For severe industrial working conditions, purchasers need to confirm packing layout, quantity of packing rings, lantern ring demands, stem surface quality and applicable emission standards.

What Is the Purpose of the Gasket and Bolting?

The gasket installed between body and bonnet stops leakage at the joint. Spiral wound gaskets, graphite gaskets and metal ring gaskets are widely adopted types.

The suitable gasket is determined by joint structure, pressure, temperature, medium adaptability and flange surface condition.

Studs and nuts provide clamping force to ensure sealing of the joint. The material grade of studs and nuts shall adapt to working conditions. Uneven bolt tightening will deform the joint and weaken the sealing effect of the gasket.

Procurement specifications shall clearly specify gasket material, stud grade, nut grade and assembly requirements, instead of simply marking them as standard accessories.

How Do the Handwheel, Gearbox, and Actuator Operate the Valve?

The operating device supplies torque to drive the wedge.

Handwheels are widely used for small and medium-sized gate valves. Gearboxes are equipped on larger valves to lower manual operation force. Electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators can be fitted if remote control and automatic operation are required.

The operating assembly generally consists of the following parts:

  • Handwheel or actuator
  • Yoke
  • Yoke sleeve
  • Stem nut
  • Bearings
  • Position indicator

Actuator selection needs to take seating torque, unseating torque, stem thrust, valve stroke, differential pressure and proper safety factor into account. An oversized actuator may damage internal parts, whereas an undersized one cannot fully open or close the valve.

What Is Included in Gate Valve Trim?

Gate valve trim generally means internal components contacting the medium and involved in movement or sealing.

According to different specifications, trim covers the valve stem, seat rings, wedge sealing surfaces, backseat, bushings and other internal metal parts.

Purchasers cannot accept ambiguous descriptions like “stainless steel trim”. It is necessary to confirm specific material grades. Each trim part should be listed separately on the material list.

Standards including API 600 specify general structure and trim requirements for certain industrial gate valves.

How Do All Gate Valve Components Work Together?

When operators rotate the handwheel or start the actuator, torque is transmitted via the operating mechanism to the valve stem. The threaded structure converts rotary motion into vertical movement of the wedge.

The flow channel opens when the wedge lifts up. When the wedge moves downwards, it gets close to seat rings and forms metal-to-metal sealing contact.

Multiple components work simultaneously:

  • Packing provides sealing for the moving valve stem.
  • The bonnet supports the stem and operating assembly.
  • The gasket ensures sealing at the joint between body and bonnet.
  • The valve body bears pipeline pressure.
  • Bolting keeps stable structure and reliable sealing performance.

What Should Buyers Check When Reviewing Gate Valve Components?

It reminds buyers not to only focus on the valve body material and requires full verification of component specifications. It also summarizes critical factors affecting the overall performance of gate valves.

Buyer Check Technical Detail
Body and bonnet Material grade, wall thickness, casting quality
Gate and seats Material, hardfacing, alignment, surface finish
Stem Material, thread design, straightness, surface condition
Packing Pressure, temperature, and media compatibility
Gasket Joint design and service suitability
Bolting Material grade and corrosion resistance
Operator Required torque, thrust, and travel
Documentation BOM, drawings, MTCs, inspection and pressure-test reports

Distributors and project purchasers need to check the full specification of all parts instead of merely paying attention to the body material.

As a Chinese gate valve manufacturer, we suggest checking the full material list before confirming production. Even with qualified carbon steel or stainless steel valve body, the valve may fail to meet working conditions if the trim, packing, gasket, bolts and operating device adopt improper specifications.

Summary

The overall performance of a gate valve relies on coordinated operation of the valve body, bonnet, wedge, stem, seat rings, packing, gasket, bolting and operating device. Before purchasing industrial gate valves, buyers shall verify complete material specifications, machining quality, sealing surfaces, actuator demands and inspection records.
