Introduction
If you are a fresh man in construction, manufacturing or metal fields, you maybe meet a terminology “steel coil”. Steel coil is one type of steel plate with long and flat shape which is rolled to coil for easy move and delivery. No matter you buy the raw materials for rooftop, pipeline, auto parts or industrial manufacturing, one of first problems comes into your mind is probably that: what is the actual weight of steel coil?
This article analysises detailedly the factors that determine the weight of coil and the ranges of standard coils, and how to estimate the weight of coils according to your own requirements.
The weight of steel coils is changed according to their width, thickness and length. The average weight of steel coils is between 7ton and 15ton (14000 to 30000 pounds). In some industrial applications, the weight of steel coils are probably reach to 30ton, but some small coil the weight is may as low as 1000 pounds.

What factors Affect Steel Coil Weight?
There are some factors affect the total weight of steel coil:
1. Steel Coil Width
Width of steel coil is more wider more steel held. Commonly the width’s range is from 600mm to 1250mm (approximately 24 inch to 49 inch).
2. Steel Coil Thickness
Thickness is also called “gauge,” whose ranges are commonly from 0.3 mm to 5 mm. Steel coils with more thickness but same length the weight are more heavier.
3. Steel Coil Length
The length of steel sheet is more longer before it’s wound into a coil, the weight of final coil is more heavier.
4. Density of Steel
The standard density of steel is 7.85 g/cm³ (or 0.284 lb/in³), which is the coefficient to calculate the weight as per the volume.
Common Steel Coil Weight Ranges
| Coil Type | Typical Weight Range |
| Light-duty (thin gauge) | 1 – 5 tons (2,200–11,000 lbs) |
| Medium-duty | 7 – 15 tons (14,000–30,000 lbs) |
| Heavy-duty (industrial) | Up to 30 tons (60,000 lbs or more) |
Example: A47″ wide coil of thin gauge steel (3,500 ft long) may weigh 46,000 lbs or 23 tons.
Steel Coil Weight Formula
You can calculate the weight of steel coil through the below simple formula:
Formula (Metric):
Weight (kg) = Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Length (m) × 7.85 ÷ 1,000
Formula (Imperial):
Weight (lbs) = Width (in) × Thickness (in) × Length (ft) × 0.284
This formula assumes the steel is mild carbon steel with standard density.
Example Calculation:
- Width: 1,000 mm
- Thickness: 2 mm
- Length: 1,500 m
Weight = 1,000 × 2 × 1,500 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000 = 23,550 kg = 23.55 tons
How to Read Weight Label of Steel Coil
If you are puchasing the steel coils from a supplier, the label generally includes:
- Width
- Thickness
- Coil ID (Inner Diameter)
- Coil OD (Outer Diameter)
- Total weight
- Heat number or batch number
Applications That Influence Coil Size
Rooftop and Wall Cladding
- Thin gauge steelcoil (24–30 mm)
- Coil weight: ~2,000–5,000 lbs
Automotive and Appliance Manufacturing
- Medium gauge steelcoil
- Coil weight: ~10,000–25,000 lbs
Oil & Gas, Shipbuilding, Heavy Fabrication
- Thick steelcoil, high-tensile
- Coil weight: Up to 30 tons or more
Safety and Handling Considerations
Due to steel coils are extremely heavy, they must be delivered or transported through the below ways.
- Lifted by crane or coil lifter
- Stored horizontally or on special racks
- Secured properly during transport
In order to accidents and materials damage happened the operators requested to follow proper handling procedures.
Summary
The weight of steel coils is from several thousand pounds to over 60,000 pounds, which is up to its width, thickness and length. To know the weight of coil is very important for the below aspects:
Steel coils can range in weight from a few thousand pounds to over 60,000 lbs, depending on their width, thickness, and length. Understanding coil weight is essential for:
- Cost estimation
- Transportation planning
- Equipment transport
- Structural design andcarrying capacity
For new learner, it is better to refer the weight chart of steel coil or use the formula to calculate the weight if your applications need exact numbers.
No matter what you are purchasing the materials for manufacturing, construction, or resell, knowing more about the weight of steel coil will help you to make more reasonable plan and work more safely.
